Keanu Reeves reveals he went to see John Wick: Chapter 3 — Parabellum in theaters to see if audiences liked the film upon its 2019 release. The third installment in the action franchise picked up right from the events of John Wick: Chapter 2 as Reeves' titular assassin goes on the run from the legions of assassins around the world when a bounty is placed on his head for his murder of a High Table crime lord on Continental grounds. Wick will have to turn to the few friends and allies he still has in the criminal underworld to find a way to seek forgiveness from The Elder, the sole figure above the High Table who can clear his name.
Reeves returned to lead the cast of John Wick: Chapter 3 — Parabellum alongside returning stars Laurence Fishburne, Lance Reddick and Ian McShane and series newcomers Halle Berry, Mark Dacascos, Asia Kate Dillon and Anjelica Huston. Hitting theaters in mid-2019, the threequel became a critical and commercial hit, grossing over $326 million worldwide and becoming the highest-grossing film in the John Wick franchise in just 10 days. This quick success led to Lionsgate greenlight John Wick: Chapter 4 for a 2021 release, though the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic and Reeves' commitments to The Matrix Resurrections led to the studio delaying the film's release a full year to May 2022.
While speaking with Esquire for his celebrated career, Reeves recalled going to see John Wick: Chapter 3 — Parabellum in theaters to see if audiences liked it. The star explained his uncertainty at the time of getting to make another installment in the action franchise and wanted to see how people responded to the threequel and to soak the reception in. See what Reeves said below:
“I didn’t know if I was going to get the chance to do another one, and I just wanted to see if people liked it. It was cool when people started laughing during the knife fight in the opening. [Laughs] I went with a friend. I was like, ‘Let’s go see John Wick 3 before it goes.’ I love John Wick movies! They’re fun! I wanted to be with an audience, because I didn’t know if I would get to see it again, or if another one would happen. I wanted to soak it in, to see it on the big screen—these movies are made for the big screen. We got popcorn—you gotta have popcorn. Some Peanut M&M’s. Sweet and savory. Coca-Cola.”
John Wick: Chapter 3 — Parabellum marked an interesting point in the action franchise, as it not only saw John Wick series creator Derek Kolstad working with multiple writers for the screenplay, but also established the biggest stakes yet for Reeves' titular character. Ultimately, the creatives behind the film would pull it off as the threequel would technically garner the best reviews of the franchise, sitting at an 89 percent approval rating from critics on Rotten Tomatoes and 86 percent approval rating from audiences. While John Wick: Chapter 2 also sits at an 89 percent approval rating from critics, the sequel's score comes from 274 reviews while the threequel's impressive score came from 353 reviews.
Reeves' visit to John Wick: Chapter 3 — Parabellum in theaters to see if audiences liked the threequel serves as further proof to his overall love of movies as much as his love for the franchise itself. The John Wick films are largely considered as assisting in his recent resurgence in popularity as his devotion to performing the various stunt sequences himself and the simple-yet-elegant nature of the three installments all resonating with hardcore action genre fans and general audiences. The wait for the assassin's return to the screen is nearing an end as John Wick: Chapter 4 is currently set for a May 27, 2022 release.
