  • Oppenheimer is returning to IMAX theaters for a one-week encore presentation, potentially pushing it past the $1 billion mark at the box office.
  • Previous films directed by Christopher Nolan have achieved the $1 billion mark, making it a possibility for Oppenheimer.
  • While reaching this milestone will be a challenge, Oppenheimer has defied the odds in the past and there are no major releases to compete with during its encore run.
Oppenheimer is returning to IMAX theaters for one week, which could push it past the $1 billion mark at the box office. The latest film from the visionary director Christoper Nolan follows the life of J. Robert Oppenheimer (played by Cillian Murphy), the theoretical physicist who spearheaded development of the atomic bomb during World War II and suffered a great personal and political fallout. Oppenheimer was initially released in theaters on July 21 and defied the odds as a three-hour historical biopic to become the third-grossing movie of the year.

Now, Oppenheimer is returning to IMAX theaters once again for a one-week encore presentation starting on November 3. According to Variety, It will screen in 70mm IMAX six locations – the AMC CityWalk Stadium 19 in Hollywood, AMC Irvine Spectrum in Irvine, AMC Lincoln Square in New York City, AMC Metreon 16 in San Francisco, BFI London in the UK, and Melbourne Museum in Australia. IMAX 70mm, which Nolan considers the optimal way to experience Oppenheimer, is the most exclusive format and will be the first tickets to sell out.

The announcement that Oppenheimer is returning to IMAX comes more than three months after its initial release. As expected, its box office gross has plateaued at $946 million at the time of writing. Thus, this upcoming IMAX re-release could give Oppenheimer the push it needs to pass the $1 billion mark. This feat has only been achieved by one other R-rated movie in history, Joker, and two movies this year, The Super Mario Bros. Movie and Barbie. In Nolan's filmography, only his Batman movies, The Dark Knight and The Dark Knight Rises, have passed $1 billion.
